Research at the Fraunhofer IFF covers the fields of digital engineering, logistics, material handling systems, automation and process and plant engineering. Our engineers work on their applied implementation in various business fields.

We employ digital technologies to plan technical systems, qualify experts in virtual environments and develop optimizing solution for every stage of the process chain – from the initial idea to development, manufacturing and sales up through commissioning.

We support logistical planning of factories and facilities and implement RFID and telematic solutions that identify, monitor and control flows of goods and materials. Our LogMotionLab and the Saxony-Anhalt Galileo Test Bed are two of the best equipped RFID laboratories in Europe.

In the field of automation, the Fraunhofer IFF has wide-ranging expertise in the development of automated and robotic systems. Our state-of-the-art measurement and testing systems improve industrial and agricultural quality assurance.

We develop new thermal plants that efficiently recover energy from biomass and waste. Among other things, we rely on fluidized bed technologies and digital process simulations to do this. With our development of reliable electrical grid and supply infrastructures for renewable energies and electric vehicles, the Fraunhofer IFF is undertaking research in a sector with great potential for the future.
