Electric Power Grids

The electric power grids group develops innovative solutions for the electric power grids of tomorrow with smart power producers, consumers and storage systems.

Our work is focused on

  • Modeling and simulating electric power grids and their components statically and dynamically to derive measures that prevent bottlenecks and blackouts
  • Developing ICT solutions that integrate system elements such as controllable loads, smart mobile storage systems (electric vehicles) and distributed energy conversion plants in electric power grids

Grid Simulation

Electrical grids are being restructured as the distributed supply of power from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power increase. This is converting the conventional unidirectional power flow into a bidirectional power flow and electrical grids are being operated in ranges for which they were not designed originally.

On the one hand, this can overload equipment such as local transformers or electric lines and, on the other hand, make the grid, for instance voltage or frequency, unstable so that certainty of supply is no longer assured. To counteract this, we model and simulate electrical grids with their related components in various scenarios. This makes it possible to identify undesired states in the grid during planning and operation and in future situations and, when necessary, to determine appropriate fields of actions. To do so, we perform load flow and short circuit calculates and run dynamic simulations n the time range.

This enables us to

  • Optimize electric power systems by minimizing grid losses, optimizing costs and maximizing the transmission capacity of electrical grids,
  • Provide information on grid stability,
  • Define and model protection concepts that assure dependable grid operation and

ICT Solutions for Electric Power Grids

Assuring a green and stable supply of electricity from its generation to distribution through consumption is the major challenge for the future. Information and communications technologies (ICT) will play a key role. They will help generating plants communicate and exchange information with the grid’s facilities and the millions of pieces of current-consuming terminal equipment, also including many electric vehicles in the future. In addition, energy producers, electrical grids, stationary and mobile storage systems and consumers must be controlled intelligently. We therefore develop ICT solutions that make this possible.

Instrumentation Conformance Tests

When novel instrumentation that monitors and protects grids, for instance, is developed and optimized, it is essential that instruments function in conformance with standards and are compatible with one another. Extensive metrological tests are needed to validate such features. In close contact with our clients, we develop test stands that verify conformance with effective standards and can also be certified in collaboration with certification bodies. After consultation, measurements are taken even during development in order to implement new functions in instrumentation.

Energy Management Concepts

Efficient energy management is growing in importance as awareness about energy resource use increases and energy costs rise in companies.
