Spectroscopy in the Hands of the Consumer – Fraunhofer IFF at Cebit
Veritably everyone has modern smartphones in their hands. The use of smartphones for more than communication alone is an important feature for many users. The market demands to scan the condition of foods for freshness or treatment, scan automotive paints for concealed touch-ups, counterfeit medicines or luxury apparel, and many more. HawkSpex® Mobile brings all this to the consumer’s smartphone and turns it into an easy-to-use material scanner for everyone and virtually each application.
The idea behind HawkSpex® Mobile pursues an amazingly simple and entirely different route. Light, essential to the implementation of spectroscopy, is dispersed in narrowband spectral channels by a combination of adjustable illumination and a colour camera. This entails switching the smartphone’s display to a sequence of different colours in rapid succession and synchronously taking pictures with the selfie camera, thus measuring the light reflected by the defined illuminated target object.
