Intelligent Complete Design for Foundries ETAL

Now more than ever, energy-efficient and sustainable solutions are a priority issue in the energy-intensive foundry industry. Together with other project partners, the Fraunhofer IFF has managed to reduce the energy required by and the pollutants emitted in the light metal casting process chain significantly in the ETAL research project. This will enable light metal foundries to cut their energy costs related to production by as much as sixty percent and their CO2 emissions by eighty percent in the future. Moreover, the new technology boosts casting quality and manufacturing flexibility based on fully automated and digitalized process control. Altogether, the innovative design cuts manufacturing costs substantially, while protecting the environment significantly. This world’s first was presented for the first time at the Hannover Messe in 2019 and won the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s Think Tank Award.
