  • University professor Dr. Julia C. Arlinghaus will be taking charge of the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF in Magdeburg on October 1, 2019. At the same time, she will be taking up the Chair of Production Systems and Automation at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Her years of expertise in the fields of digitalization, logistics, process engineering and automation as well as her active collaboration with numerous industrial companies make her the ideal appointment for both jobs. Prior to this, she held the Chair of Management for Industrie 4.0 at RWTH Aachen.

    Solar power, wind power and the lot – the growing use of renewable energy sources is resulting in substantial fluctuations in energy production. Fraunhofer researchers have now made it possible to design industrial processes in small and medium-sized businesses to be demand-responsive. This enables companies to maximize their use of green power from their own power plants, to respond to fluctuations, and, in the future, to contribute to stabilizing the energy supply.

    The metalworking industry and foundries in particular consume extreme amounts of energy and thus produce large amounts of CO2 as well. In the future, light metal foundries will be able to cut their energy costs related to production by as much as sixty percent and CO2 emissions by as much as eighty percent. A new technology developed at the Fraunhofer together with other partners will make this possible. This world first will be presented for the first time ever at this years’ Hannover Messe.
